Change to Boat Licensing in Canada

Transport Canada has recently announced that all new, transferred and renewed Pleasure Craft Licences are now valid for 5 years only, which means that current licences with no expiry date will now have one. See the details on the Transport Canada web site under Applying for a Pleasure Craft Licence .  There is a $24 fee for applying for a new, renewed or transferred licence. Also, starting December 31, 2027, wind-powered pleasure craft over 6 metres long will need a Pleasure Craft Licence.

You can find your new expiry date for your vessel on the web site based on when your current licence was issued. Details re applying for a Pleasure Craft Licence are on the Transport Canada web site.

A Pleasure Craft Licence is different from a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). A Pleasure Craft Operator Card is like a driver’s licence for a car. You need one to operate a power-driven pleasure craft. It educates you on the basic boating safety rules.

See more information on boating safety on the FLCA web site under Community/Boat and Water Safety .
